Pastor Johnson's book leaves a lot to be desired. While he has done his research on Lil' Wayne, he has forgotten about the rappers that came before Lil' Wayne. "2 Live Crew", "NWA", "Ice T" and "Tupac" (just to name a few) all hit the scene long before Lil' Wayne did and all were blamed for their negative influence on urban youth. Instead of focusing on all the reasons why he thinks Lil' Wayne is such a bad influence, he should first understand that the fall of urban youth began long before Lil' Wayne was even born. As a pastor, the focus of this book should've been to uncover the lies being told in rap lyrics and why putting them to music makes them so appealing. He could've then gone on to explain why Lil' Wayne and others like him are so attractive to the youth of today. Pastor Johnson is doing a good thing by trying to educate the youth and warn them of the dangers of rap and it's negative influence, but as a leader whose called to preach the gospel to ALL people has he forgotten that that Dwayne Carter has a soul too?Product details

While this book has many valid points, the fact that it is self published should have keyed me to the fact that it would not be an exceptionally researched book. I realized that the book was more of a cultural study, but I was hoping to learn the impact of rap on culture, from this author's perspective, with a researched position. Other than the lack of research to prove his argument, he relies upon the Bible for proof of the moral decay of youth and how to confront it. That, in of itself, was enough for me to doubt much of the author's poorly researched topic, allowing me to skim the many pages that discussed the Bible.
That being said, there is a lot of promise for this book. Pastor Johnson traces teh life of Lil'Wayne, through lyrics and life experiences. He touches on psychological conditions that could have shaped the rapper, where he could have used more research and citations to more fully convince the reader of how the rappers trauma as a youth shaped his rapper career. He discusses how when Jay Z "retired," that the position for the best rapper in teh world became vacant, which Lil' Wayne filled. Chapter 5 "The Urban Females Signs of a Dying Generation," was one of teh weakest chapters. Again research into the effects of misogyny on young women would have helped to strengthen his argument. He talks about Abortion, yet fails to acknowledge that sex education would help prevent unwanted pregnancy and abortions.
While this was a light read, there are many other books that are better researched that make the same argument.
